Things to note when handling and storing geomembranes

The transportation method of HDPE geomembrane is container transportation from the factory to the construction site. Each roll of geomembrane will be edge-sealed and packed with tape before being packed into boxes, and will be bundled with two special hanging membrane tapes to facilitate loading and unloading. When unloading goods at the construction site, mechanical equipment such as forklifts or cranes are used.

1. Quality assurance measures during the transportation process of HDPE geomembrane

(1) When unloading in the designated material storage area, it must be guided by experienced loaders to ensure the safety and efficiency of the unloading process and protect the HDPE geomembrane from damage.

(2) During the hoisting process, special hanging membrane straps provided by the manufacturer should be used to bind items, and any other hard ropes must not be used as a substitute.

(3) During the unloading process, the HDPE geomembrane should avoid contact or collision with any hard substances. In addition, special hanging membrane tapes should still be tied to the roll material after the HDPE geomembrane is stacked to facilitate transportation during construction.

(4) After unloading materials at the stockyard, the roll number information of each roll should be recorded immediately, and the factory information should be carefully checked to check the appearance quality of each roll. If damage is found, records need to be kept and cooperation with the on-site supervisor is required to take samples and submit them for inspection.

(5) During the construction process, the requirements for handling work are consistent with unloading, and damage to the HDPE geomembrane caused by mechanical operations must be avoided.

(6) Film transporting machinery is prohibited from entering the site where geotechnical materials have been laid. If necessary, it can only be carried by manual transportation.

(7) The geomembrane membrane must be prevented from “adhering” because high temperatures during transportation or storage will cause this phenomenon to occur in the geomembrane. Once this situation is discovered, the quality assurance execution unit must be notified immediately.

2. Quality assurance measures for HDPE geomembrane storage

(1) Before the materials enter the site, the material storage site needs to be prepared, and comprehensive consideration must be given to the flatness of the site, the adequacy of the film cutting site, and the convenience of secondary transfer to ensure that the storage site can protect the materials and take into account flood and fire prevention and other factors.

(2) When stacking materials, ensure uniform space and choose a flat and stable place for stacking.

(3) Material arrival records should be kept to check whether the type, specification, quantity, appearance, etc. of the materials are consistent with the order, and materials should be submitted for inspection in a timely manner.

(4) Materials need to be stacked according to classification, and a certain interval should be maintained between each row.

(5) The material storage area should avoid storing flammable and explosive items and keep away from fire sources and any corrosive chemicals.

In summary, the following points need to be noted when handling and storing geomembranes:

1. Avoid using violence: When transporting geomembranes, you should try to avoid using violence to avoid damaging the membrane.

2. Prevent collisions: The geomembrane has a certain degree of elasticity, but collisions with other items should be avoided to avoid damaging the diaphragm.

3. Temperature control: The suitable storage temperature of geomembrane is -18°C to 50°C. During storage, care should be taken to control the temperature to avoid overheating or overcooling.

4. Humidity control: The suitable storage humidity of geomembrane is 90% to 95%. When storing, care should be taken to control humidity to avoid excessive dryness or moisture.

5. Antioxidation: Geomembrane has certain antioxidant properties, but care should be taken to avoid contact with other chemicals during storage to avoid damaging the antioxidant properties.
